Decisions this guide helps you control

01 · ARTWORKPrepare the master file

Keep editable artwork, color information and revision identity together.

02 · PLACEMENTAnchor the position

Use garment-panel references and dimensions instead of a floating visual mockup.

03 · APPROVALReview a physical sample

Check scale, distortion, seams, fabric behavior and grading before bulk.

In this guide
  1. 01Define the print type
  2. 02Dimension the placement
  3. 03Control the artwork file
  4. 04Match artwork to fabric
  5. 05Control size-range behavior
  6. 06Approve the printed sample
  7. 07Release the production brief

Boxer brief placement print artwork must describe both the graphic and its relationship to the garment. A logo pasted onto a product photo may communicate the idea, but it does not define production size, orientation, panel position, seam clearance, size-range behavior or the selected print process. A controlled brief gives the artwork, pattern and factory teams one version to approve.

Boxer brief placement print artwork: the short answer

Quick answerSupply editable artwork plus a measurable placement map.

Identify the garment style and panel, provide the production artwork in the file type agreed for the selected printing route, state the finished print width and height, and dimension its position from stable pattern or garment reference points. Define color intent, orientation, size-range rules and seam restrictions. Approve a physical sample made on the intended fabric before releasing bulk printing.

Artwork readiness checklist

Item Production-ready evidence Approval question
Master artwork Editable vector or other supplier-confirmed production file, with version. Is this the exact file authorized for output?
Finished size Width and height in physical units; note any proportional scaling. What dimensions must the printed result meet?
Reference point Distances from named seams, centerline, waistband edge or panel marks. Can placement be checked consistently?
Color Named target and approved print submission or sample. What controls color on this fabric and process?
Size range Fixed size, proportional scale or size-specific files. How should the graphic behave from smallest to largest size?
Sample status Physical garment approval with documented comments. Is the print released for bulk or still provisional?
Scope & update noteOEM and private-label men’s underwear; updated October 12, 2026.

File type, color separation, line detail, output resolution, ink system and print durability depend on the confirmed printing method, fabric and supplier capability. This guide does not impose one universal technical setting.

1. Separate placement print from all-over print

A placement print is positioned at a defined location on a garment or panel. An all-over print repeats or covers a larger fabric area and is normally prepared around a repeat, panel map or fabric-width process. Confusing the two changes artwork setup, registration and production planning.

State whether the graphic is applied to a cut panel, finished garment or another stage confirmed for the method. This decision affects allowable position, distortion risk and seam interaction.

Define whether the visual is one placement or part of a repeating print system.

2. Use the pattern and stable reference points

Position the graphic from named references: center front, center back, side seam, waistband seam, leg opening, panel notch or another stable construction point. State whether the dimension is taken to the artwork edge, centerline or another defined artwork point.

A front pouch can curve and stretch, so a flat mockup may not predict the worn result. The pattern team should review the intended visual center and any areas where seams or high stretch could distort the design.

Factory noteA visual arrow is helpful; a dimensioned reference is controllable.

Use the mockup to show intent and the placement map to control production. If they conflict, identify which version governs.

3. Prepare a controlled production artwork file

Keep an editable master whenever possible and confirm the output file required for the selected process. Outline or package fonts as agreed, preserve the approved proportions, and identify all linked graphics and color layers. Do not send only a screenshot, compressed chat image or an unlabeled file named “final.”

  • Artwork name and revision
  • Editable master file
  • Finished width and height
  • Orientation and mirror instruction
  • Named colors or approved reference
  • Background or transparency intent
  • Print method under review
  • Approval owner and date

4. Confirm fabric and printing compatibility

Fabric composition, color, surface, stretch and heat sensitivity can affect the viable print route and visual result. The same artwork can behave differently on cotton-rich jersey, smooth synthetic fabric or mesh.

Ask the supplier to confirm the production method against the selected fabric before final artwork preparation. If the material changes after approval, review color, detail, stretch and hand-feel implications again.

Fabric or artwork factor Production question
Dark fabric Is an underbase or alternative color build required for the selected method?
High-stretch panel How will stretch and recovery affect the graphic?
Fine detail Can the confirmed process reproduce the lines at the approved output size?
Seam crossing Is the placement suitable for the process and garment construction?

5. Define what happens across the size range

A fixed-size print may look larger relative to a small garment and smaller relative to a large garment. Proportional scaling can change brand consistency and may create several production files. Decide whether the artwork stays fixed, scales by a stated rule, or uses size-specific files.

Also define the position rule. A fixed distance from a seam, a centered placement and a proportionally scaled placement are not the same instruction. Review the smallest and largest planned sizes when the visual risk is meaningful.

6. Approve a physical sample before bulk

Review actual output on the intended fabric for dimensions, position, orientation, color direction, edge quality, hand feel, stretch behavior and interaction with seams. Record the approved sample or strike-off identity and every correction.

Any change to artwork, size, position, fabric, garment pattern or printing route after approval should trigger a documented impact review.

7. Release one printing brief for production

The final brief should identify the garment style, colorway, size rule, panel, artwork file and version, finished dimensions, position references, selected process, approved sample and any inspection points. Keep the same identifiers in the tech pack, purchase order and approval record.

Do not replace the approved file through a casual message. Issue a new revision and confirm whether material or printed panels already produced can still be used.

Buyer Questions

Frequently asked questions

What file format should I use for boxer brief placement artwork?

Use the format confirmed for the selected printing process. An editable vector master is often useful for logos and line art, but the supplier should confirm the actual output requirement.

Can I approve placement from a digital mockup?

A mockup communicates intent but does not prove scale, distortion, fabric response or seam interaction. Approve a physical output when those factors matter.

Should the print be the same size on every garment size?

That is a brand decision, not a universal rule. Define fixed, proportional or size-specific behavior and review the extremes of the size range.

Can the print cross a seam?

It may be possible for some constructions and methods, but the supplier must confirm feasibility and the buyer should approve the physical result.

What if the garment pattern changes after artwork approval?

Recheck the placement map and sample because seam position, panel shape and visual center may have changed.
