A men’s underwear tech pack should give the development and production teams one controlled source for the product. It should define the design, measurements, material, waistband, construction, artwork, labels, packaging and revision status clearly enough to build and review a sample.

A tech pack does not need to be visually elaborate. It needs to remove ambiguity, show which decisions are approved and make changes traceable.

What is an underwear tech pack?

An underwear tech pack is the technical instruction set for product development and production. Buyers use it to communicate the intended garment; pattern, sampling and production teams use it to translate that intent into measurable work.

For a private-label boxer brief or trunk, the document should answer three questions: What is the product? How should it be made? How will the sample and bulk order be checked?

Core sections of a men’s underwear tech pack

1. Product identification and revision control

  • Brand-internal style code and product name
  • Garment type and base size
  • Season or collection reference if useful
  • Revision number, revision date and responsible approver
  • Clear status such as draft, sample review or approved for production

Each revised file should replace—not compete with—the previous working version. A concise change log prevents an old measurement or artwork file from re-entering production.

2. Technical drawings

Provide front, back and relevant inside views. Call out pouch seams, fly construction, gussets, leg openings, binding, panels, waistband attachment and any special stitching. Illustrations should show construction, not only the marketing appearance.

3. Bill of materials

4. Measurement specification

List every point of measure with a written method, base-size value and tolerance. Where several sizes are ordered, include the grade rule or the completed measurement chart for each size.

Common boxer brief points include relaxed waist, stretched waist where required, front and back rise, side seam, inseam, leg opening, hip width and pouch measurements. Define whether measurements are taken flat, relaxed or under a stated tension.

5. Construction and workmanship

Identify seam types, stitch appearance, topstitching, reinforcement, binding, hemming and waistband attachment. If a visual reference is used, connect it to a written callout so the factory does not need to infer the construction from a photo.

6. Artwork and placement

Separate artwork files from visual mockups. Record the actual file name, dimensions, colors, orientation, print or transfer method and measured placement from stable garment reference points. Mark any artwork that is not yet final.

7. Label and packaging instructions

List care content, size marking, country-of-origin information where applicable, folding method, individual packing and carton requirements. Compliance text and barcode data should be reviewed for the target market; the factory should not be expected to invent it.

8. Quality and inspection criteria

Connect inspection to the approved sample and specification. Record critical measurements, visible workmanship standards, color references, print alignment, label placement and packing checks. Product-specific testing requirements should be identified before quotation and material approval.

How much detail is enough?

The document is detailed enough when another qualified person can understand the product without relying on undocumented conversations. Avoid filling pages with repeated branding or generic quality language. Use space for decisions that affect cost, sampling, fit and production.

Factory note: A reference garment can accelerate discussion, but it does not replace a controlled specification. Record which features should be matched, changed or ignored.

Tech pack workflow from brief to bulk

  1. Issue a development version. Mark open decisions and provide reference files.
  2. Confirm feasibility. Review material, construction, waistband, artwork, MOQ and missing information.
  3. Build the sample. Use one named version as the working source.
  4. Record fit comments. Refer to exact points of measure and construction callouts.
  5. Approve the product version. Update measurements, materials and artwork after accepted changes.
  6. Release the production specification. Identify the approved sample and final document set.

Common tech pack problems

  • Measurements are shown without measurement methods.
  • Mockup colors are treated as approved color standards.
  • Artwork has no final dimensions or placement.
  • Fabric composition is listed without weight, construction or stretch direction.
  • Several files use the same name but contain different instructions.
  • Sample comments remain in email or chat instead of the controlled revision.
  • Packaging and labeling are added after the quotation scope was agreed.

Can an underwear factory create a sample without a complete tech pack?

Often yes, if the buyer provides a clear reference garment, drawings and decision brief. The missing specifications still need to be documented during development before bulk approval.

Should the tech pack include tolerances?

Yes. State tolerances for relevant measurements and agree how stretch garments will be conditioned and measured.

Does a tech pack replace an approved sample?

No. The document controls instructions; the approved sample provides a physical reference. Both should identify the same approved product version.

Who should approve tech pack revisions?

The buyer should define the authorized approver. The supplier should record received changes and confirm which revision is used for sampling or production.
