Fabric GSM is the weight of a square metre of fabric, measured in grams. For an OEM men’s underwear project, it is one part of the fabric specification—not a shortcut for softness, stretch, recovery, opacity or durability.

Two fabrics can have the same composition and GSM but behave differently because of yarn, knit structure, finishing and elastane performance. A useful buyer brief therefore combines target GSM with the product, fit and performance decisions the fabric must support.

What does GSM mean in men’s underwear fabric?

GSM means grams per square metre. It gives buyers and suppliers a consistent way to discuss fabric weight, but it does not describe the complete material. For example, a fabric may feel compact or open, firm or fluid, even when its measured weight is similar to another option.

Use GSM to narrow the material direction and control repeat orders. Then confirm the variables that determine how the fabric works in a finished boxer brief, trunk, brief or long-leg style.

Why should OEM buyers specify GSM?

A defined target helps the development team source or develop a closer material, compare sample rounds and identify an unintended change before bulk cutting. Without it, phrases such as “lightweight cotton” or “premium modal” leave too much room for interpretation.

GSM also affects other decisions. A change in fabric weight can alter drape, seam appearance, opacity, drying behavior and how the garment interacts with the waistband and pattern. That is why fabric approval and fit approval should not be treated as separate projects.

How to choose a target GSM for an underwear project

Start with the intended garment and market position, then test fabric candidates rather than selecting a number in isolation.

Should the fabric feel light, balanced or substantial? Material direction without assuming one universal GSM

If a reference garment is available, record its composition, measured GSM and construction where possible. Do not assume that copying the number alone will reproduce the reference: finishing and knit structure still need to be compared.

How GSM should be checked during sampling

Agree how and when the material will be checked. Fabric condition, sampling location and test method can influence the result, so the buyer and supplier should use one written method and an agreed tolerance.

  1. Record the target material and target GSM in the product brief.
  2. Review available or developed swatches for hand feel, stretch, recovery and opacity.
  3. Use the selected fabric in the fit sample when feasible.
  4. Record the approved fabric reference and any acceptable tolerance.
  5. Reconfirm the production material before bulk cutting.
Factory note: A sample made in substitute fabric can answer construction questions, but it may not confirm final fit or recovery. Record clearly which sample decisions remain provisional.

Common GSM specification mistakes

Using composition as the whole specification

“95% cotton, 5% elastane” does not define weight, knit structure, finish or recovery. Add the missing construction and performance details.

Treating one GSM as suitable for every style

A long-leg base layer and a close-fitting brief can place different demands on the material. Validate the target in the intended pattern.

Changing fabric after fit approval

A different weight or recovery can change garment measurements in wear. If the fabric changes materially, review whether another fit sample is required.

Leaving tolerance undefined

Production fabric is controlled against an agreed range, not an abstract perfect number. The workable tolerance must be confirmed for the selected fabric and project.

How to write an OEM fabric request

A practical request might read: “Men’s boxer brief, close fit, target cotton/elastane jersey, target GSM to be matched against the attached approved reference, dark solid color, four-way comfort stretch, stable recovery and suitable opacity. Please confirm available options, measurable specifications, tolerance and sampling route.”

Include the style, approximate quantity, colors, size range, print requirement and intended market. Those inputs help the supplier judge whether an available fabric is suitable or whether a custom material route needs separate confirmation.
